Evelyn Lieberman was the first Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, serving from 1999 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton. She is currently the Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the Smithsonian Institution. Prior to this, Lieberman was Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State, and from 1997 to 1999 Director of the Voice of America.
Before joining the VOA, Lieberman was Assistant to the President and the first female Deputy White House Chief of Staff. She also served as Deputy White House Press Secretary. From 1988 to 1993, Lieberman was Press Secretary for Senator Joseph Biden, and served as Director of Public Affairs for the Children’s Defense Fund.
