Cambodia's Public Diplomacy EffortsEdit
In the aftermath of Pol Pot’s despotic Khmer Rouge regime, the Kingdom of Cambodia has awakened itself to the opportunities and beneficence of working cooperatively with the foreign world. The rapidly developing country has increasingly strong ties with nations throughout the world, with recent cooperation with nearby Malaysia leading to especially fruitful connections.
Tourism is quickly becoming a vital aspect of Cambodia’s economy. With such sites as Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear, Cambodia has experienced an influx of visitors. Statistics of monthly travel show the greatest number of tourists are coming from Korea, with Japan and the United States trailing with only half as many visitors.
Cambodia & ASEANEdit
In April1999, Cambodia became the latest member accepted into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The organization represents a major political and economic link between nations of Southeast Asia, providing a forum for all issues of national interest. With the growing participation of China, South Korea, and Japan in ASEAN+3, the association is a dominant regional force, and continues to play an increasingly significant global role. With Cambodia’s admission, the nation is experiencing increasing benefits from its political representation, including trade relations and investment opportunities. Yet upon formal acceptance, H.E. Mr. Hor Namhong, Senior Minsiter of Foreign Affairs, made is evident that Cambodia did not view its entry as a magic bullet for economic and social prosperity:
“I firmly believe that the ASEAN membership is neither the end in itself nor the guaranteed short-cut to prosperity, and social and economic progress on its own. We have to make all out efforts to achieve the socio-economic development in order to contribute to the strengthening of the ASEAN role in political, economic, security and other fields, in the region and in the world as well. Cambodia possesses potentials to contribute to the realization of the above-mentioned ASEAN strategy.?
